Auditor - Mark Giesige

Mark is currently completing his second full term as Mercer county Auditor, a position that has been challenging and fulfilling for him. "The County Auditor is an important part of the checks-and-balances system of local government. The auditor works closely with other county officials to keep the county going strong."

Because the Auditor's office carries with it complex responsibilities that include real estate assessment (despite the name of the office, the County Auditor audits nothing). In 1999, Giesige earned his Assessment Administration Specialist designation from the International Association of Assessment Officials. He continued to take classes to maintain that designation, and keep up his skills at their best.

In his tenure as auditor, he as also worked hard to update the county's data processing system, to streamline his staff, and to modernize the county mapping system, "This office has a long tradition of being run well, with the best interests of the people of Mercer County at heart. It has been my challenge to continue that tradition, while ushering the office into the 21st century. We've kept the same integrity, while modernizing our methods."

Mark is a native of Celina, where he lives with his wife, Jean, and their four children. He is active in his church, Immaculate Conception of Celina, and is a lay associate of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. He was a manager in private industry before he became assistant auditor to former Mercer County Auditor, Roger Schwieterman in 1993. In 1994, he was appointed Auditor to fill the remainder of Roger's term, upon Roger's retirement.

Roger remains his mentor, a model of probity and fairness that he tries to emulate. "Throughout my life, I've been blessed with role models who have showed me that it's not enough to talk about your beliefs - that you have to live your beliefs, every day. First, my parents, then, one of my first employers, Jerry Roesner of Jerry's I.G.A. in Celina. There were others, too, including Roger Schwieterman. People like them have made this county what it is, and it's our job to keep that tradition alive."
